Motherhood after Infertility and Parenting a child with ASD

Still processing

We got a call 6 days ago. E’s semen analysis came back and there were 0 sperm found. To say that was a shock, is an understatement. We’ve had about 15 SA’s over the last couple years, 5 of which were from july 2016-november 2016 and he has had sperm in every single sample. His numbers weren’t great but they were at least there!

How can someone go from sperm to no sperm in a matter of 2 months?! They didn’t even give us any type of “where we go from here” scenario. They said he needs to go see another fertility urologist and that’s it. We have been trying to get that scheduled but they wont schedule it until they get the records from the RE and no one at the RE seems to be in a hurry to send them. We have been calling daily.

I have specifically stayed off google as I am not sure how helpful it will be and I am already upset/stressed about it enough as it is.

We were hoping to start treatment in a month or so and now? Who knows what we can do. I am so lost and hurt. Why does this have to be so hard?

  1. This question is so personal, but do you guys have sex somewhat regularly? I know that sperm production will decrease over time if it’s not, ahem, expressed. Again, so personal, but that’s my only idea on the topic.

  2. oh gosh, I’m so sorry you got this result. I have heard stories of men with really low counts taking supplements for several months and being able to greatly improve their results that way so I really hope there is something that might work for your partner. I hope you can get an appointment soon and get some good advice!

  3. I’m so sorry. The last analysis we have on my DH, he had 1 million, 0% morphology. The tests before that had all been super low too. 8 million, 3 million…. My RE said they’ve been having really good success treating men with antioxidants. DH has been taking:
Solgar Natural Vitamin E 1,000 IU, Omega 3-6-9 1,200mg soft gel, Naturewise Vit D3 5,000 IU, Sports Research Astaxanthin 12mg, Basic’s Super Antioxidant Protector Formula, Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100mg, Nature’s Way Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids 1,000mg, Seeking Health Homocystex Plus, and occasionally L-carnitine and L-Arginine and the occasional zinc pill. You can find all of those on amazon which is where I usually buy them.

I know that’s an awful lot of pills and I don’t have any semen analysis to prove his count is up. But I do think it is good for his health in general if nothing else.

I looked back and saw that your DH’s count has been close to normal at times (right?) so hopefully this was just a one-time incident and it will come back up again. Hugs!

    • Thanks! I will definitely look into those for him. From July-November they ranged from 1.5-8 million with 80-95% motility. They don’t do morph during IUI’s but he had 1% morph at his semen analysis in July. So not great but at least they were there. I am hoping they come back with some assistance. Fingers crossed!

  4. I’m so sorry. I don’t know anything about male factor, but I hope you can get an appointment for the fertility urologist soon.

  5. Ahh crap, that’s is sucky.
Like journeyformybaby mentioned, I’ve heard that antioxidants can be a great help. Friends were seeing someone that does traditional Chinese medicine and that made a difference & my acupuncturist said there’s research coming out about n-acetylcystein being good both for men and women. But hopefully you can get an appointment soon & they’ll give you a good plan xo

  6. I’m so sorry to hear this. My husband had issues with his semen so our specialist told him to take Proxeed (I think it’s Proxeed Plus). I’m sure your specialist will have suggestions but just wanted to let you know anyway. Hugs x
